TUCSON, Ariz. — The Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (AWCIM) is poised to help shape the future of artificial intelligence in healthcare following the selection of longtime technology leader Matt Stoner as a University of Arizona AI Fellow.

Stoner, who has supported AWCIM for 26 years and currently serves as a senior information systems manager with University Information Technology Services, was selected for the inaugural 2026–27 AI Fellows Program through the University of Arizona Office of Responsible Artificial Intelligence. The program brings together faculty and staff leaders from across the university to help guide the responsible adoption and governance of artificial intelligence.

For more than two decades, Stoner has worked alongside AWCIM faculty and staff as technology has transformed healthcare, education and research. Now, his extensive institutional knowledge and deep understanding of AWCIM’s work, combined with the expertise and connections he will gain through the AI Fellowship, create a unique opportunity for the Center to explore how artificial intelligence can support its mission.

As AI increasingly influences clinical care, medical education, research and healthcare operations, thoughtful leadership will be essential to ensuring these technologies are used responsibly and effectively. Stoner already advises AWCIM and other Health Sciences partners on identifying potential AI applications, assessing risks and overcoming barriers to adoption.

Through this Fellowship, he will deepen relationships and collaborations across the University of Arizona while bringing new insights back to AWCIM. That combination positions the Center to play a leading role in understanding not simply where AI can be applied in healthcare, but how it can be used in ways that remain thoughtful, human-centered and aligned with the principles of whole-person care.
